The growing zero waste movement will be the focus of the plenary session when the Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo (CWRE) returns to Toronto’s International Centre on Nov. 5-6.
Zero waste is a hot topic in Canada, where municipalities across the country are committed not only to managing the amount of garbage reaching landfills, but also to achieving the ideal goal of the eventual elimination of the waste stream.
Sponsored and coordinated by the FCM Centre for Sustainable Community Development, “Low to No Waste” will highlight best zero-waste strategies, techniques and practices. The session, which is free to all CWRE attendees, will be featured on Wednesday, Nov. 5, as part of the show’s seminar program.
“As Canada’s only trade show serving the waste, recycling and public works markets, we are committed to providing the latest information on trends and best practices in the industry,” said Arnie Gess, show manager for Messe Frankfurt. “The plenary session is just one example of CWRE’s comprehensive 2008 educational seminars and special events.”
Other CWRE sessions will focus on topics including environmental waste reduction, new developments in environmental law, regulatory changes, markets for compost, advances in curbside waste collection, greenhouse gas offset credit marketing and strategic planning for waste management.
First-Hand Experience
Preceding the commencement of the trade show, on Tuesday, Nov. 4, the Ontario Waste Management Association is sponsoring Recycling Facility and Waste Disposal Tours, which will visit facilities throughout Southern Ontario.
The Recycling Facility Tour will include e-waste recycling at Global Electric Electronic Processing Inc. and glass recycling at Proaver North America, both in Barrie; Newmarket’s York Region Waste Management Center, a state-of-the-art transfer station; and Miller Waste Systems in Durham, a private sector waste management facility.
The Waste Disposal Facility Tour will visit leading waste disposal facilities, including Region of Peel and Algonquin Power EFW Inc. in Brampton; Newalta in Stoney Creek; and Walker Environmental Group in Thorold. Hard hats, safety shoes and safety glasses are required for all tours. Space is limited and attendees are encouraged to book early.
Now celebrating its 11th year, CWRE offers attendees the opportunity to experience the latest products and services in the exhibit hall, learn about industry innovations at the seminar program and network with peers during the many special events.
